At a press conference held at the Kaizer Chiefs village on Thursday, head coach Ernst Midderndorp confirmed that Itumeleng Khune and Khama Billiat will not be available for selection going into Saturday’s clash against Bloemfontein Celtic.
Billiat, who was stretched off the pitch in the 48th minute against Stellenbosch with a hamstring injury, is still said to be out recovering with the help of the club’s medical staff.
“We can’t make a big secret out of it,” said Middendorp.
“The fact is Khama Billiat is not available, we put him on a rehab, treatment, recovery. We are aware about it after we had to take him out in the beginning of the second half in the game in Cape Town.”
“There is a tightness, there is an overuse (of the player) over the last months and we have to be very clear structured to and follow the medical teams advice to take him out for some treatment over the last 3-4-5 days he hasn’t been on the field. He will not be in the field this week.”
The return of the Bafana Bafana no1 goalie has been anticipated by the Amakhosi faithful and left a lot of people in confusion.
Khune was said to have fully recovered from the injury by the club’s official website ahead of their TKO semi-final clash against Maritzburg United.
However, the German tactician ruled him out for Saturday’s clash against Celtic.
“Yes as I said he’s not injured, he’s in training. We now have to make a decision on the competitiveness… and the competitiveness best prepared for this game is Daniel Akpeyi, and the second best prepared for being competitive is Bruce Bvuma,” confirmed Midderndorp.
