After all the drama in the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League, Leruma United are officially crowned the provincial champions after defeating Vaal Professionals 4-2 on penalties over the weekend.
Both sides played in two-legged encounters in the provincial playoffs. The first leg ended with a 2-1 scoreline in favour of Leruma, however, tables turned around in the second leg when Vaal Pros got the better of Leruma 1-0 to end the game 2-2 on aggregate of which led to the penalties where the Vereeniging-based outfit missed out on the national playoffs spot.
Leruma will now represent Gauteng at the ABC Motsepe League national playoffs in Mpumalanga from June 28 – July 3.
The club will join Glendene United (Western Cape), BCM Stars (Eastern Cape), Platinum City Rovers (North West), Hungry Lions (Northern Cape), Umvoti (KwaZulu Natal), FC Sivutsa NPC (Mpumalanga), Mangaung Unite (Free State) and The Dolphins (Limpopo) in the national playoffs.
However, it was chaos just after the first leg of the provincial playoffs, as Vaal Pros lodged a complaint, claiming that Leruma did not follow the rule of under 23 as they substituted four of their under 23 players before half time of which they were left with one under 23 player, but lost the case and were ordered to pay a R100 000 fine.
Contrary to the arbitration’s outcome, Vaal Pros decided to take the matter to the high court because they were not satisfied with the arbitrator’s ruling of which in the end succumbed to a decision to drop the matter.
