Limpopo School Football Foot Soldier


Throughout the youth football development and player recruitment programmes, Limpopo stand tall and shoulders with its peers.

Some of the renowned famous footballers parading their skills in the DSTV Premiership, the likes of Hlompho Kekana, Jackson Mabogwane, Keletso Makgalwa, Mulumowandau Mathoho and Ramahlwe Mphahlele, were scouted and developed by men and women in the Limpopo province.

FARPost Technical Study Group (TSG) was in Polokwane recently to interview one of the school football development pillars, Coach Hendrick Mukwevho.

1. Who is Coach Mukwevho

The quiet Coach Hendrick Mukwevho was born on the 24th March 1977 at a place called Tshakhuma in the Limpopo Province.

His youth was characterized by big interest in most of the sporting activities at school including soccer, baseball and volleyball. He matriculated from the Mavhungu Andries Secondary School in 1998.

2. Further Football Education

Coach Mukwevho has followed in the footsteps of the senior Limpopo coaches who values education, the likes of Coach Frans Mogashoa (SAFA Acting Technical Director), Raymond Mdaka (SAFA Limpopo Provincial Technical Officer) and Ike Pula (SAFA Limpopo and Capricorn Senior Players Selector).

He holds a SAFA Grassroots License and SAFA Level Coaching Certificate, all obtained in the last ten years of his service to youth football.

3. Northern Academy Project

Over the last five years the coach has dedicated his coaching life to the establishment of the football component of Nothern Academy.

This Academy attracts and scout potential youth players from all corners of the province, based on the technical, tactical, physical and psycho-social aspects to the young players.

Amongst his school and provincial football achievements are the following:

3.1 School Football

• School league winner for Under-19 three times from 2010, 2011 and 2012 for the Meridian School
• Under-15 School league winner 2011, 2017, 2018, 2019 for Curro Meridian and Northern Academy
• Under-17 School league runner-ups in 2012 for Meridian School
• Under-13 obtain third position in the league in 2011 for the Meridian School
• Curro Thatchfield Under-13 and Under-15 Cup Winner 3 times in succession

3.2 Provincial SASFA Tournaments

• Runner-ups in the Metropolitan Cup Under-16 year 2011 for the Meridian School
• Champions for the McDonald Under-14 Cup in 2012 for the Meridian School
• Provincial McDonald Cup bronze medal in 2013 with Northern Academy
• Copa Coca Cola Under-15 Provincial Winner in 2019 with Northern Academy
• Copa Coca Cola Under-15 Provincial Runner ups in 2017 with Northern Academy

3.3 National SASFA and SAFA Tournaments

• Represent Limpopo Province in the SAFA TRANSNET Under-14 Tournament 2014 in Beaufort West
• Represent Limpopo Province in SASFA Metropolitan CUP Under-16 in 2011 in Pretoria
• Represent Limpopo Province in the McDonald Under-14 Cup in 2012 in Pretoria
• Gold medal for South Africa National Under-17 Schools Sports in 2018 at Wits University, Johannesburg
• 4th Position at the Copa Coca Cola National Under-15 finals in 2019 in Durban
4th Position at the National Under-17 School Sports in 2019 Durban

4. Curro Meridian School

From 2009 till 2020, Coach Mukwevho has been employed by this prestigious school institution to nature its supreme talent. As as Youth Coach and Teacher Assistant, he has managed to combine his football expertise and nurture the education component of his players.

The programme allows players to train throughout the week, and upon selection of the main school team, play against other Curro schools in a National Championship.

5. Notable success of Coach Mukwevho

In total the programmes that Coach Hendrick has worked on has delivered in total 16 players to various professional teams in Limpopo and outside the province.

The following are the statistics and beneficiaries:

• 8 players went to the Mamelodi Sundowns FC Academy
• 2 players went to SuperSport FC Academy
• 4 players went to Polokwane City FC
• 2 players went to TUKS Academy at the University of Pretoria.
