Liverpool will be without their African stars midway through the 2021/22 season.
Guinea, Egypt and Senegal have all booked their spots at the 2021 Afcon in Cameroon. This means Liverpool will have to release Naby Keita, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane for the tournament.
Originally planned to be held in January 2021, the tournament was pushed back by 12 months due to the Covid19 pandemic.
Salah’s Egypt qualified for the tournament following their 1-1 draw away to Kenya on Thursday afternoon. The result put Egypt on top of Group G, with neither Kenya or Togo now in a position to catch them or Comoros.
Keita’s Guinea secured their place in the competition on Wednesday with a 1-0 win over Mali, while Mane’s Senegal had already qualified prior to the March international break.
Jurgen Klopp will have to start planning for life without the trio and go look for back up players in the upcoming transfer window.
This season, the Reds have struggled to hit top gear in the Premier League and currently sit in sixth position with 46 points from 29 games. Salah is the club’s top goal scorer with 25 goals in all competitions while Sadio Mane has scored 10.
On the other hand, Keita has struggled to get regular game time due to recurring injuries. The midfielder has made just 10 appearances for the English champions this season.
