Real Madrid returned to the top of La Liga table after beating Barcelona 2-0 thanks to goals by Vinicius Junior and Mariano Diaz at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday evening.
The El Clásico win sends Madrid one point clear at the top of the table with Barcelona and Sevilla second and third respectively.
“Winning a Clásico is a positive thing. After recent results, some of which were not so good, and having been knocked off top spot, we needed to make it up to the fans and beat a top rival like Barcelona,” said Madrid captain Sergio Ramos.
Ramos went on to say that they let Barcelona have the ball more as his side decided to sit back. “I don’t know if that was the best approach, but it was the decision we took,” admitted Ramos.
“They [Barca] had control of the ball, but they didn’t create any real chances. When you play Barcelona, you need to not be afraid. Yes, we have great mutual respect, but we knew how to go out there and clinch it tonight,” added Ramos.
The all-important El Clásico saw a number of Madrid players reach milestones. It was Benzema’s 500th game for the ‘Whites’ while Isco played in his 300th game for Madrid with academy graduate Lucas Vazquez featuring in his 200th game.
Thibaut Courtois appeared in his 50th League match for Madrid making some crucial saves in the El Clásico.
