Algeria defeated Mali to stretch their unbeaten run.
The desert Foxes ran out with a 1-0 victory at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker on Sunday.
Manchester City winger Riyad Mahrez netted the only goal of the game in the 56th minute of the encounter. Youcef Belaili broke down the wing before crossing for the captain who made no mistake lobbing the ball over goalkeeper Djigui Diarra who came off his line.
Mali came into the game at the back of a convincing 3-0 victory against Chad, but they were halted by the reigning African champions who are now unbeaten in 10 international games.
Algeria will now shift their focus to Thursday night’s friendly against Tunisia while Mali will be facing DR Congo at home on the same day.
The friendlies are part of preparations for the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers scheduled to start in September.
Djamel Belmadi’s side are in Group A with Djibouti, Burkina Faso and Niger. Their first two games are against minnows Djibouti before locking horns with Burkina Faso who are expected to give them a run for their money.
Although they missed out on the 2018 finals in Russia, Algeria are one of the favourites from the African continent to qualify for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.
They bolster a host of stars who are enjoying some great football across Europe’s biggest leagues. This includes AC Milan’s Ismael Bennacer, Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Ramy Bensebaini, West Ham United’s Said Benrahma, OGC Nice’s Youcef Atal and Real Betis centre back Aissa Mandi.
