Baroka striker Evidence Makgopa has been a revelation for the club since making his debut towards the end of last season.

Born in Driekop town in Limpopo, Makgopa was discovered by Bakgaga while playing in an amateur tournament for a local side, Sekgobela Santos FC in 2018.

After making an impression for the DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) side with six goals in 24 matches, the 20-year-old was promoted to the senior side by then coach, Dylan Kerr.

He quickly made an impression scoring five goals in the last nine matches in all competitions last season. Makgopa also earned himself a Nedbank Cup most promising player of the season nominee.

“I don’t want to lie to you but that nomination really motivated me a lot to work hard and I have never looked back since then,” said Makgopa ahead of the DStv Premiership clash against TS Galaxy on Wednesday night.

“If I keep pushing and having great games I can even go on to win an award. I would be happy if I add three from the seven that I have scored so far, then I will be happy,” he said.

His goal during the 1-1 draw against Maritzburg United last Friday, his seventh of the current season, meant that he has now scored 12 goals in all competitions for the club, but remains 16 goals behind the joint all-time top goal scores Gift Motupa and Thabiso Kutumela, who have both scored 28 goals for the club.

Makgopa’s performances have also been rewarded after being named in the 40-man preliminary SA U/23 squad for the Tokyo Olympics, alongside his teammate Goodman Mosele.

“It’s a very special feeling to be on a 40-man squad. Even though we are still going to fight to be in the final squad but it would be a good thing to represent my country at the Olympics. I am very confident that I will be in the final squad. Honestly, I don’t think there is anything that can stop me because I will continue to work hard,” added Makgopa.

A final 22-man squad will be unveiled prior to the major international multi-sport event taking place from 23 July-8 August 2021.
