Polokwane City are yet to decide on the future of their captain and long serving midfielder Jabulani Maluleke whose contract comes to an end on Tuesday, 30 June.
Maluleke is in his 7th season with Rise and Shine but is one of the eight players whose contracts comes to an end this month.
The other players who are affected by the contract expiry include goalkeepers George Chigova and Lehlohonolo Phali, defenders Thabiso Semenya, Sibusiso Mbonani and Simphiwe Hlongwane, as well as midfielders Edgar Manaka and Wiseman Maluleke.
FARPost can confirm that the club held a meeting with all the players on Saturday and informed them that they will only know by latest Monday if the club will keep them or let them go.
When contacted for a comment on the future of Maluleke, Polokwane COO Tincy Tema told this publication that the club is still very much interested in keeping the 38-year-old at the club.
“Jabu (Maluleke) is still an integral part of Polokwane City, we all know that his contract is coming to an end when this season ends but as Jabu as we all know him, don’t be surprised if you see him remaining at the club,” said Tema.
“But that is something that has to be confirmed with him but we still want to continue with him but obviously we will have to sit down and talk to him and I am sure he would also want to stay and continue to contribute further to the club,” he said.
There is also a likelihood that the players whose contracts are coming to end will be given short-term deals until the current season is concluded but Tema says all decisions will be guided by the directive from the Premier Soccer League.
“That one of course we will get the guideline from the PSL because remember this is a matter that will not necessarily affect Polokwane City only but all the clubs so we will hear from the PSL on what they will advise us to do,” added Tema.
This publication has it on good authority that of the 8 players whose contracts come to an end, Chigova and Wiseman Maluleke are set to depart at the end of the season while it remains uncertain what the team will decide on the rest.
