Sadio Mane is closing in on Senegal’s all-time goal scoring record held by Henri Camara
Mane was on the score sheet yet again for the Lions of Teranga as they defeated the Cape Verde Islands 2-0 at the Stade Lat Dior on Tuesday.
Goals from Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye and the Liverpool star were enough to seal the victory for coach Aliou Cisse’s men.
Gueye opened the scoring in the 56th minute before Mane scored a 86th minute penalty for the West Africans.
Senegal have now gone six games without a loss.
The penalty was Mane’s 23rd international goal for Senegal which has moved him up to second spot in the country’s all-time goal scoring charts. He is now just eight strikes behind Camara.
Champions League winning goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was also handed a start while Watford’s Ismaila Sarr lasted 86 minutes and won the penalty that was converted by Mane.
The game was part of Senegal’s preparation for the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers in September. Their first two games are against Togo and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
After qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Senegal were knocked out in the group stage of the competition finishing third behind Japan and Colombia.
