Eric Tinkler and his Maritzburg United troops didn’t take much time to recuperate. Instead, ‘The Team of Choice’ knuckled down and put all their focus on getting ready for the 2020-21 Premiership season.
Even though the 2019-20 campaign was the most demanding football season with fixture congestion in the Bio Bubble amid Covid-19, Tinkler refuses to rest on his laurels.
The season concluded two weeks ago with Maritzburg sealing a top-eight finish (seventh) and they also went all the way to the Telkom Knockout final, losing to Mamelodi Sundowns.
“It’s time for us to look at the new season. The boys are on a bit of a break at the moment and it’s not a very long one, so they’ll be back again this week,” said Tinkler.
“Then we start preparing for the new season,” added Tinkler who also stated that consolidating on what his men have built over the past 18 months will be important going into the new term.
PSL Chairman Irvin Khoza revealed that the new campaign will start off on October 9.
“Right now, we are a small squad and we need to rebuild and strengthen the squad,” he said.
Tinkler is well aware that he might lose some of his top players to other clubs.
Siyanda Xulu has already left the club to join Hapoel Tel Aviv FC in Israel while Miguel Timm has also departed. Richard Ofori and Rushine de Reuck are also linked with a move away from the ‘Team of Choice’.
“There’s going to be interest from other clubs regarding certain of our players and obviously we would like to try and ensure that we keep those players for the next season.
“That’s very important, to get these issues all ironed out, as there is only really a month available to prep ourselves and get ready for the upcoming season,” concluded the Maritzburg mentor.
