Hlongwane guides Maritzburg to victory over Stellies


Bongokuhle Hlongwane’s brace guided Maritzburg United to a 3-0 win over Stellenbosch FC in an Absa Premiership clash at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday evening.

The 19-year-old Hlongwane opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a header from inside the six yard area to give for the ‘Team of Choice’ a 1-0 lead at half time.

Early in the second half, Tebogo Tloane scored his first goal for Maritzburg to make it 2-0 with Hlongwane completing his brace in the 84th minute.

With the win, Maritzburg extended their unbeaten League run to four matches and jumped to fourth on the log standings with 36 after 23 matches.

“It was an outstanding performance from us tonight,” said Maritzburg coach Eric Tinkler

“I’m very very proud of the performance of the boys. They really did well and they deserved the three points,” added Tinkler.
