Former Bafana Bafana left winger Delron Buckley has left Maritzburg United after his contract ended.

Buckley was assistant coach to Ernst Middendorp last season when the team survived on the last day of the season.

The club’s communication officer Nigel Naicker confirmed the news to FARPost and further explained that two coaches from the MDC team will work closely with the first team.

“Yes, Buckley has left the team, his contract ended and he is no longer part of the team,” he said.

“The club decided to bring Maahier Davids to work with coach Ernst Middendorp as his assistant. They will be working closely with Peter Peterson and Sibusiso Mathonsi who are MDC coaches,” said Naicker.

The Durban-born coach was appointed as assistant coach in September 2020 and briefly led the team as caretaker coach after the departure of Eric Tinkler.

Buckley also played for the Team of Choice between 2012 and 2014, making 43 appearances and scoring three goals.

With the Team of Choice expected to be busy in this transfer window, this publication understands that Brandon Theron could be their next acquisition.

“We’ll make announcements later today or this week regarding other developments in the team.”

“For now there is nothing confirmed and the club is working towards some new signings,” concluded Naicker.
