Maritzburg v Chiefs: Pressure on the coaches

Share

The long-awaited return of Kaizer Chiefs to the DSTV Premiership league programme begins today at the Harry Gwala Stadium, against struggling bottom-dwellers Maritzburg United.

After a comfortable 2-nil win in the Caf Champions league matchday 3 against winless Petro Athletics from Angola, ‘Amakhosi’ will square up against ‘The Team of Choice’ with the axe firmly on the neck of the two coaches, Gavin Hunt and Ernst Middendorp.

This scenario comes after disastrous results for the two mentors in both league and cup matches, and thus FARPost Investigative Unit anticipate a rather career-deciding match in KZN.

  1. Middendorp under pressure

The German mentor joined the current campaign after the axing of Eric Tinkler, and somewhat dived into the sinking ship. Without preseason, Middendorp had to negotiate a tumultuous period of lack of results and low morale from the Maritzburg team.

After a couple of oxygen sustaining results, the wheels have drastically came off the Maritzburg bus, as players were released and new personnel introduced.

Middendorp is known for his catastrophic emotional imbalance, and a recent fight with the media over his capability to save the situation at the KZN-based outfit, demonstrate a leader devoid of ideas and solutions in these difficult times.

  1. Hunt still underperforming

The former Black Leopards, Moroka Swallows, and SuperSport United mentor seems to have bitten more than he can chew. Besides, the Fifa ban imposed on Chiefs for the saga involving the Madagascan Dax, Hunt has played enough games to be judged.

A consistent loser against Orlando Pirates in both the MTN 8 and league, draws unnecessary attention to the experienced coach.

Furthermore, it not only the loss to the perennial arch-rivals Pirates, but the manner in which the two losses has been meted to Chiefs, one a careless drubbing in a cup and the other a rather subdued performance of the once-mighty Amakhosi.

Truth be told, Chiefs got back to winning ways in the CAF encounter against a hapless, toothless and palooka Petro, questioning the resolve and status of Chiefs going into this massive clash against their hoodoo team.

  1. The verdict

Certainly, a win for either coach will provide enough oxygen to live for another day, but again, a loss to either technicians will still have dire consequences to their already faltering seasons.
