Maritzburg vow to give Sundowns a fight

Maritzburg United assistant coach Vincent Parks Kobola is confident that his side can put on a good showing against the star-studded Mamelodi Sundowns on Friday evening at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

During their return to action last week, ‘The Team of Choice’ went down 3-2 to Black Leopards at FNB Stadium.

Kobola says they are mindful that the ‘Brazilians’ will also be looking to make amends after suffering a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Cape Town City in their most recent game.

“It doesn’t matter who we play, we have to go there and compete and make sure we win the game,” said Kobola.

“The boys are looking good, we only have one injury, which is [Mxolisi] Kunene, he twisted his knee against Leopards and the other guys are injury-free and they are looking good and ready for the game on Friday.

“It is going to be a tough game against Sundowns after their defeat against Cape Town City,” he admitted.

“We want to go there and win because we have set ourselves a target of top five. It doesn’t matter who we play, we have to go there and compete and make sure we win the game,” added Kobola.

Maritzburg are on 39 points in sixth place on the Absa Premiership log standings after 25 matches, while their title-chasing opponents, Sundowns occupy second place, six points behind leaders Kaizer Chiefs.

“I think Sundowns will want to win against us and we also want to win against them because we also come from a defeat against Leopards and I know Sundowns will try to win this game because now they want to close the gap at the top,” concluded Kobola.

The encounter will start at 18:00 in Atteridgeville.
