Ajax Cape Town Coach Calvin Marlin says he warned his players about a lapse of concentration ahead of their ‘iKapa Derby’ against neighbhours Cape Umoya United, and exactly that happened.
The ‘Urban Warriors’ failed to extend their lead at the top of the GladAfrica Championship after they suffered a 1-0 loss against fellow cape side Cape Umoya at the Athlone Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Former Ajax Cape Town midfielder Riyaad Norodien scored the only goal of the match to give Cape Umoya FC the win and to deny his former side a much needed 3 points that would’ve extended Ajax’s lead at the top to 8 points, at least until Saturday afternoon.
Speaking to the media after the game, Marlin says he warned his side about complacency but pleads with his players not to be negative as they are still the log leaders.
“Exactly what we warned them about. The way the game started, the first 20-25 minutes they coming and running hard. After that we started getting on the ball, we started dominating play, created some great chances.
“But as I told them that if we switch off for one split second at the back from a corner or a set piece or anything, they gonna sneak a goal and that is exactly what happened,” Marlin reflected.
“And when you are 1-0 down in the Derby, it’s always going to be difficult. Today wasn’t our day I suppose, but we are still on top, if other teams win we’ll still be 2 points on top, so we’re still in the lead. So we must stay positive, yes the result wasn’t there but we still played well and we still dominated play. We got to take the positives out of this game, now is not the time to get negative,” said Marlin.
