As the battle for Free State ABC Motsepe League Nedbank Cup qualifiers semi-finals and final were completed over the weekend, Mathaithai FC were the big winners as they are one step away to seal their Nedbank Cup last 32 spot.
The first semi-final of which saw Mathaithai thrash Sibanye Golden 3-0 at Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium in Botshabelo set the provincial Nedbank Cup semis on a high mood on Saturday.
The second semi-final fixture was a tense affair and could have gone either way as Excelsior United played to a goalless draw with D’General in regulation time which led to the penalty shootout, where Excelsior managed to walk away victorious.
Mathaithai and Excelsior cruised their way into the finals, in an encounter deemed as a do-or-die because of the raised intensity amongst the two teams.
Undoubtedly, it was a humdinger of an encounter as both teams played to a 1-all draw in the 90 minutes on Sunday. ‘Sebete Boys’ won the game after defeating Excelsior 5-4 on penalties.
Mathaithai as the winners of the Free State Nedbank Cup qualifiers will face SAB League winners in the next round to decide the overall provincial winner.
