Banyana Banyana defender Noko Matlou had a winning start to life in Spain on Wednesday afternoon as Eibar recorded a 2-0 win against EDF Logrono on her debut.
Alongside her national teammate Thembi Kgatlana, the veteran was named in the starting XI for the home game as Eibar wanted all three points to move up in the league. Matlou played the entire 90 minutes for the Spanish side while Kgatlana had a good game before being substituted for Aida Quintero in the 84th minute of the match.
The former SL Benfica player has been in red hot form for the Spanish outfit in recent weeks and she continued leading the attack in fine fashion. She reached the 10-goal contribution for the season after getting her fifth assist of the season.
It took 33 minutes for the former African Footballer of the Year to make an impact as she played the ball through to her striking partner Miriam Rodriguez Gonzalez who made no mistake to give the hosts the lead
The attacker has now scored five goals and assisted another five as she continues to impress in Europe.
Arola Aparicio made it 2-0 just two minutes into the second half as the hosts cruised to a comfortable victory and took maximum points. With this win, Eibar moved up to 10th spot on the table with 17 points from 12 games.
Nothando Vilakazi also made a cameo appearance for the visitors coming on as an 85th minute substitute. The left back is still fighting for a place in the team, but Spanish defender Leticia Fernandez has been playing exceptionally well in that position this season.
Matlou will be pleased to have kept a clean sheet on her first appearance in the league and with such a solid performance, more starts should come her way this season.
