SA midfielder Lehlohonolo Matlou has extended his loan with Portuguese third division side A.D Sanjoanense by another season after impressing in his first season with the club in the 2019-20 campaign.
The 22-year-old signed with A.D Sanjoanense from Absa Premiership side Bidvest Wits and played a total of 20 games scoring twice in the Portuguese Campeonato.
In the 2018-19 season the midfielder played with South African second tier side Cape Umoya where he featured in 18 games scoring only once. In the 2017-18 season he turned out for Cape Town All Stars playing five games in what was a very brief stint with the club.
The left-footed midfielder has also represented South Africa at youth level having featured four times for the U-20 national team in previous years.
He starts his Campeonato de Portugal campaign this coming Sunday away against Sao Joao De Ver before hosting Vila Cortez two days later at the Estadio Conde Dias Garcia in Madeira.
His compatriot Edson Khumalo hasn’t signed an extension at the club having arrived with Matlou last season also on loan from Wits. The striker featured 19 times for Sanjoanense last season scoring three goals in the league and another two in the Taca De Portugal.
Bidvest Wits has had a very good relationship with Sanjoanense in the past few seasons seemingly using the Portuguese club as a direct route into Portugal for their youngsters.
SA U-23 winger Kobamelo Kodisang also played for the club in the 2018-19 season featuring for 23 games scoring 4 goals before his transfer to Portuguese Primeira Liga side SC Braga where he featured for the B team last season. The winger played 10 games scoring twice for Braga B, most of progress can be attributed to Sanjoanense who helped him to adapt to the Portuguese style of play and culture – Matlou is also going through a similar system.
