Matthews continues impressive form in Sweden

Tashreeq Matthews was on target again for Varbergs BoIS in Sweden.

The 20-year-old scored his third goal of the campaign for the Allsvenskan outfit, but it wasn’t enough to help them avoid a 2-1 defeat away at AIK.

Matthews has started the 2021 campaign very well and established himself as a regular member of the club’s starting line-up. In nine league appearances, the winger has scored three goals and assisted another strike for Varbergs.

Varbergs led the hosts for the majority of the game, but two late goals from Filip Rogic and Bojan Radulovic secured all three points for AIK in front of their own fans.

South African midfielder Luke le Roux was introduced in the 62nd minute of the game after returning from suspension. The 21-year-old recently returned from the U23 camp where he couldn’t make the final 22-man squad for the Tokyo Olympics.

Dean Solomons was an unused substitute while Keanin Ayer remains sidelined by an ankle injury.

It has been a challenging couple of years for Matthews since he made a move from Ajax Cape Town to join German giants Borussia Dortmund in 2018. After playing regularly for the club’s U19 side, the attacker failed to graduate to the first team.

Dortmund sent Matthews on loans to FC Utrecht (Dutch Eredivisie) and Helsingborg (Allsvenskan) before permanently selling the youngster to Varbergs at the start of the 2020 campaign. Under coach Joakim Persson, the South African youth international seems to have finally found his feet.

Elsewhere in Sweden, Hildah Magaia scored a hat-trick to help BK Moron defeat Borgeby 5-0 in the league on Saturday evening. The Banyana Banyana striker has now scored nine league goals in 11 appearances for Moron.
