May recalls emotional Bafana moments

Kazakhstan-based midfielder May Mahlangu has shared the best moments of his career so far.

Mahlangu has had a successful career in Europe and played in six different countries since leaving South Africa for Sweden at the age of 16.

The 32-year-old played 40 times for Alexandra United before moving to Helsingborg in the Swedish Allsvenskan in 2008. At Helsingborg, Mahlangu played for five years winning the league title and being named the Player of the Season in the 2011/12 season.

After a successful spell in Sweden, he went on to play for several clubs across Europe. He played in Turkey (Konyaspor), Belgium (Sint-Truidense), Romania (Dinamo Bucuresti), Bulgaria (Ludogorets Razgrad) and Ordabasy in Kazakhstan, where he currently plays his trade.

Speaking to this publication, the Stars of Africa graduate said playing in Sweden and scoring for the South African national team in the 2013 Afcon will always be close to his heart.

“Playing in Sweden obviously and winning all the trophies that a player can imagine and dream of, I’ve achieved that so I became a legend in Helsingborg playing with Henrik Larsson there.

“The second highlight is playing in the national team and scoring (the kind of) goals that I’ve always scored in Europe. That was very emotional for me and I was warm inside.

“That was something else because these things I do them in Europe so I was waiting for a time when it would happen in South Africa while South African people are watching and then it happened at the Afcon.”

After three months without playing football due to Covid19, the anchor will return to his club to conclude the 2020/21 campaign. Since joining Ordabasy, he has featured 45 times for the club and scored three goals in the process.
