Former Cape Town City and Orlando Pirates star Mark Mayambela headlined the raft of new players who were unveiled by GladAfrica Championship side Cape Umoya United on Thursday.
The skilful and experienced left winger is joined at the club by three other former Pirates players; Tshepo Gumede, Manti Mekoa as well as Michael Morton, who featured for the Buccaneers in recent seasons.
Other big-name signings Cape Umoya made were former Ajax Cape Town and Mamelodi Sundowns striker Eleazar Rodgers and Zimbabwean hitman Gabriel Nyoni, who was released by Maritzburg United a few months ago.
For the better part of last season‚ the Cape Town-based outfit flirted with relegation but a strong showing in the second half of the 2019/20 campaign allowed them to get to safety in 11th place on the log standings.
Zimbabwean teen sensation Douglas Mapfumo, and Mozambican Herman Mpepo also penned deals with the second-tier league side.
It’s clear from the Cape Umoya boss Roger de Sa that the club is gunning for promotion to the topflight and can’t afford to be fighting relegation once again.
Cape Umoya will take on TS Sporting in their first match of the 2020/21 GladAfrica Championship season at Kabokweni Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
