Gumede: AmaZulu’s Mr dependable

AmaZulu FC star Mbongeni Gumede has proved to be a reliable versatile player in the 2019/20 Absa Premiership season.

The 26-year-old has shown that he has the ability to play in multiple positions which is one of the most important traits a footballer can possess.

Gumede, who is a right-back by trade, has enjoyed game time under three different coaches, Cavin Johnson, Jozef Vukusic and Ayanda Dlamini.

When the current campaign started the former South Africa under-20 international was providing cover for Sibusiso Mabiliso in the left-back position.

Gumede played well in an unfamiliar position in big Absa Premiership matches against Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates and Lamontville Golden Arrows. Picture:

The man nicknamed ‘Shoes’ helped ‘Usuthu’ keep a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw against Pirates last August having been introduced as a substitute.

Shoes then started for AmaZulu in the left-back position as they drew 1-1 with Lamontville Golden Arrows in the KwaZulu-Natal Derby last September.

Experienced left-back Tsepo Masilela was signed by Usuthu last November as the club strengthened its defence.

This meant that Gumede, who nurtured in the Pirates academy, could now focus on competing for places in the right-back and central defence positions.

The former South Africa under-20 captain helped AmaZulu record league wins over Cape Town City, Baroka FC, Stellenbosch FC and Bloemfontein Celtic.

Shoes, who has been used an impact player coming off the bench this term, managed to secure a starting berth against Kaizer Chiefs last March.

The tough-tackling player started in the right-back position and he produced a solid performance as Usuthu edged out Amakhosi 1-0 in Johannesburg.

AmaZulu have been unable to build on that important win as the season has since been suspended indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Gumede will be looking to add to the 13 competitive appearances which he has made this term when the campaign resumes.
