Edouard Mendy received a hero’s welcome in Senegal.
The Chelsea goalkeeper landed in Dakar on Thursday night and his national team compatriots broke into jubilation as he arrived.
Mendy played a significant role as the Blues defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the Uefa Champions League final at the Stade Dragao last weekend. Kai Havertz’s goal was enough to hand Thomas Tuchel’s side the victory.
Mendy broke a record for the most clean sheets in the competition- he kept nine clean sheets in 12 games.
By winning the prestigious competition, Mendy became the second Senegalese player to win the trophy after Sadio Mane who won it with Liverpool in the 2018/19 season.
Chelsea also managed to finish in third position on the Premier League standings with 67 points from 38 games. The Champions League was Chelsea’s second final in the 2020/21 campaign. They lost 1-0 agaisnt Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester City in the final of the FA Cup at Wembley Stadium, but they managed to redeem themselves with the historic victory against the Citizens in Portugal.
Senegal are in camp to start their preparations for the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Togo and Congo in September. Aliou Cisse’s side take on Zambia in an international friendly on Saturday before playing Cape Verde Islands three days later.
They finished second in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after losing 1-0 against Algeria in the final. Mendy played two games in the tournament.
