Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy will remain in custody after appearing in court on four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault on Friday.

He will appear again in court on 15 November for a further plea trial.

Meanwhile, his trial date has been fixed for 24 January 2022 and is expected to last two-and-a-half weeks.

The 27-year-old was refused bail last month and is currently on remand at HMP Altcourse in Liverpool.

Mendy only spoke to confirm his name during the 45-minute hearing and he was not asked to enter a plea.

Eleanor Laws QC, defending Mr Mendy, said there would be an application to dismiss the charges at the November hearing.
