Orlando Pirates in-form striker Frank Gabadinho Mhango missed out on Malawi’s sportsman of the year award which went to athlete Stanley Lifa in Lilongwe at the weekend.

Mhango, the leading scorer for the Premier Soccer League with 14 goals in 18 matches, had made it to the final three of shortlisted nominees for the award alongside the short distance runner Lifa and taekwendo athlete Yamikani Guba.

The Pirates player did not attend the gala due to Pirates commitments which saw Malawi women’s national football team captain Tabitha Chawinga named Malawi Sportsperson of the Year 2019 following her exploits for club and
country.

The China-based striker received the award at Bingu International Convention Centre where Malawi National Council of Sports rewarded outstanding athletes from the previous year.

The Jiansgu Suning striker shrugged off competition from athlete Stanley Lifa, who had earlier won best male athlete award on the night, to bag the overall best athlete award.

To emerge overall best, the three-time Caf Women Player of the Year nominee had won Sports Woman of the Year award at the gala. Tabitha helped the national team to reach the second round of Olympic qualifiers, leading Suning to first-ever Chinese Women’s Super League championship and emerging as the league’s top scorer last season.

Three separate panels comprising sports journalists and administrators were involved in shortlisting and choosing the winners based on
performance, discipline and consistency among others.
