Daniel Akpeyi’s past heroics shouldn’t just be forgotten, says his coach at Kaizer Chiefs, Ernst Middendorp.
Middendorp’s backing of the Nigerian international comes days after their 2-1 defeat to Maritzburg United at FNB Stadium in an Absa Premiership match.
Akpeyi, who’s been Chiefs’s number 1 this season, has been heavily criticised for an error that led to one of Maritzburg’s goals.
Middendorp, however, is having none of it and says the whole club, including its multitude of supporters should be backing Akpeyi.
“We have seen a fantastic Daniel Akpeyi over months, rescuing us in the final stage saving a penalty (in the 1-1 draw against Maritzburg United in December),” said Middendorp, during the club’s media day at Naturena on Wednesday morning.
“He was very crucial in other games as everybody knows.”
Reading between the lines of what Middendorp said, Akpeyi is likely to retain the jersey when Chiefs take on Highlands Park in the Nedbank Cup Last 16 at Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa on Saturday (15:00).
Akpeyi has also received support from the players, including Daniel Cardoso, who said one bad game doesn’t make one a bad player overnight.
