Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp is a relieved man after defender Eric Mathoho returned to camp in good shape.
Mathoho, 29, picked up a knock in Chiefs’ last match against Golden Arrows, which they won 2-0 and with him being called up to the Bafana Bafana squad that beat Mali 2-1 in the Nelson Mandela Challenge over the weekend, Middendorp admitted that he was anxious.
The German was worried that Mathoho could well aggravate the injury and risk another long layoff after recently returning from a long-term injury.
“We let him go at a certain time, because obviously there’s an obligation from Fifa’s side. We are working with laws and regulations,” Middendorp told the media from the club’s base in Naturena earlier today.
“It was a bit of a scary moment for me to say okay, how far is he?
“But he was able to train starting on Friday, Saturday and then of course playing 90 minutes (for Bafana). Nothing happened – he is in full shape and we gave him the regeneration yesterday and he started full training,” he added.
