“Daniel Akpeyi signed another two-year contract. Itu khune is still under contract, where does he fit in? Age is totally on his side, he got a bit of an injury challenge at the moment.”
These are the exact words of Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp when he was probed about the possibility of giving Itumeleng Khune a run against Royal Eagles.
Middendorp made it clear that he is unlikely to give the Bafana Bafana international a run against GladAfrica Championship outfit Eagles in their Nedbank Cup last 32 last on Saturday at FNB Stadium.
“Just make him (Khune) fit, a player with his quality we are all happy to have him there and let him work, work on his positive side, on his strong side, make him even better and that’s what it is,” said Middendorp.
“Sometimes you have to wait some months, you have to wait, probably a season then is your part, that’s what it is, nothing else, “added the Chiefs mentor.
Akpeyi, who was signed from Chippa United in 2019 has managed to keep 8 clean sheets in 16 Absa Premiership matches for log leaders ‘Amakhosi’ this season and he even won an award in Nigeria for best goalkeeper.
“The procedure is not very clear because there is a player who was good, who is fantastic and then all of a sudden should I take Samir Nurkovic out and play somebody? I don’t think it is advisable…why must I break it?.
“Daniel Akpeyi played fantastic games, week in, week out over months what’s the reason for it?” asked Middendorp.
“We have a respectable team and squad and first selection and sometimes players must wait for their opportunity whenever it is right and that’s it. I had a chat with Bruce Bvuma today, we can talk about him because he is a national team player too, what’s his future, how’s is he seating out,” said the German coach.
“We will not set up just because everybody deserves game-time, whether it is Itu, Rama, Akumu, Khama, whatever,” added- Middendorp.
The former Maritzburg United coach also added that speedy winger Khama Billiat and new signing Anthony Akumu along with Khune are all available for selection for the club’s Nedbank Cup last 32 game against Eagles.
Kickoff at 18:00.
