Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp has made it clear that Daniel Akpeyi is the club’s number 1 goalkeeper, amid constant questions about Itumeleng Khune’s readiness.
Akpeyi was signed from Chippa United in the January transfer window as a panic buy to help out in the goalkeeping department which was struggling after Khune picked up a long term injury at the start of the 2018/19 season.
Since then, Akpeyi has seen his stock rise through match winning performances, while Khune has been constantly struggling with injuries and Chiefs coach Middendorp has backed Akpeyi to keep his place for the foreseeable future.
“Let’s not talk about other players, we have a number one goalkeeper here whose performances (are good) week in and week out, being a national team goalkeeper from Nigeria having done a fantastic job,” stated Middemdorp.
“Guys, we are looking into it week by week, and what performance we are getting and it’s a reference point,” concluded the German coach
Khune has recovered from a hamstring injury and is expected to be back in contention for the starting line up when the PSL resumes in January.
Chiefs head into the Christmas break with 35 points after 14 games with a 7-point lead above second placed Mamelodi Sundowns, who are the defending champions.
