Maritzburg United coach Ernst Middendorp is happy but cautious with his team’s performance as they look to move away from the relegation zone.
The Team of Choice recently thrashed relegation-haunted Chippa United 5-1 and Middendorp sees some positives from his team.
Speaking after their match against Chippa United the German mentor believes his side is on the right track in their quest to avoid relegation after winning two matches on the trot. “It’s definitely a huge step following a win in Nelspruit against TS Galaxy some weeks ago, we had a certain problem in the first 20 minutes where we conceeded a goal, we were really able to bring our approach.
“All of a sudden we started pressing high line, forcing the opponent to make mistakes and the transition into attack was really good, we scored five but it could have been one or two more,” said Middendorp.
The former Kaizer Chiefs coach is worried about some errors that his team is committing and the amount of time they will spend without competitive football.
“We still have space for improvement because we are still making mistakes, we know some players are not where we want them to be – we’ve got a number of players who are still injured.
“It might be because of the intensity of trainings in the last three months, but quite a number of players coming back from injury, like (Phumlani) Ntshangase after surgery that took him four months to heal and we’ll use the time to keep the momentum despite our next game being on the 23 April. It means another 14 days or more (without action) but we have to do our job to find the right way to prioritize and get everybody on the same page,” concluded Middendorp.
The Team of Choice have now gone five matches without a defeat and winning their last two. They will next welcome Baroka FC at Harry Gwala Stadium on 23 April.
