Umvoti FC are the first team to qualify for the provincial playoffs in the ABC Motsepe KwaZulu Natal League with a game to spare after defeating title contenders GWP Friends 2-0 at Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Umvoti coach Doctor Mkhonza told FARPost that his players were disciplined, focused and helped them a lot to be where they are.
“What helped us was to keep most of our players, though some of them left and keeping discipline in the team also played a huge role,” he said.
“The mood in the camp is amazing, everyone is waiting for us to play the provincial playoffs. We are left with one game and we’ll play a different team because we’ve already qualified for the playoffs,” said Mkhonza.
Having been to the national playoffs on numerous occasions, the coach is aware of what they need to do to qualify to play in the GladAfrica Championship next season.
“We are very determined to go through to the provincial playoffs, it is our wish to win them so that we can correct our mistakes at the national level.
“The players are promising the way they are focused and encouraging each other, you can tell that they want to play in the first division (GladAfrica Championship) next season.”
“It was our plan all along to go back to the national playoffs. The last time we played there, we lost on penalties, so we want to correct our mistakes this time around.
“The owner of the team has been very supportive and he has been taking care of everyone in the team, all he wanted is to win the league and qualify to play in the ABC Motsepe League playoffs,
“We reinforced our team with young players and we made sure that we play for three points, not just play good football without results,” added Mkhonza.
