Mamelodi Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has credited the players for their Caf Champions League group stage good run following a 2-1 win over TP Mazembe this past Saturday in Lubumbashi.
Bafana Ba Style became the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals of the 2020/21 Champions League after thrashing the DR Congo giants.
The Brazilians have won all of their last five matches of this particular tournament this season.
“I must also not take away the credit from the team, I think we were prepared for this encounter,” Mngqithi said in a post-match interview.
“We knew we were playing against a very good team, but our confidence was very high. We have played more than 20 games and we have not lost a game which is also a good account for the team and the way we prepare.
“The boys fought hard. I must say some circumstances within the game were difficult for the boys.”
Sundowns are flourishing on the summit of Group B with nine points from 3 outings with three games to come next.
“We did a lot of video analysis, we knew almost all of their combinations, we knew all their strong players, we were anticipating that their number nine would be starting and thought that he would be a thorn on our side,” he reveals.
“We were aware that both of their centre backs are right-footed and planned that if we press them more to the left there would be limitations.”
Masandawana will welcome TP Mazembe at home in the return leg of the competition on 16 March.
