Pitso Mosimane’s right hand man at Mamelodi Sundowns, Manqoba Mngqithi, has stressed the importance of not only being successful in winning League titles but hopes they improve their domestic cup record as well.
Downs are set to face a on-form Golden Arrows in a Telkom Knockout clash at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Saturday.
“To be honest for a team like Sundowns, it’s unacceptable not to win these cup competitions in as much as we’ve already won the Telkom Knockout once (four years ago),” admitted Mngqithi.
“But if you look at the number of years, we deserve to have won it twice or thrice, the MTN8 has eluded us right through, the Nedbank Cup we have also won it once so it does concern us because in as much as they are not our major trophies that we want to win but nothing should stop Sundowns from winning these trophies.”
Despite Sundowns still being in the run for the League, CAF Champions League, Telkom Knockout and will also participate in the Nedbank Cup next year, Mngqithi still believes that his squad is able to win and possibly claim all the trophies at stake.
“To be honest I cannot really point a finger because I always believe the team we have every season has the capacity to win all trophies… we’ve had bad schedules in the past with the Champions League overlapping through and not giving the team a chance to have pre-season,” he said.
“This season we are having a little bit better programme in terms of the team getting time to rest like the other teams, but the congestion is a little bit tough for us sometimes.
“Even now in December everyone will be enjoying Christmas and we will be in Algeria on Christmas Day (for the Champions League) you know.
“But that does not mean we must not win all these other cups because we are competing in these other competitions. We are just unfortunate,” he added.
