It appears to be a blessing in disguise for Orlando Pirates that they have drawn Stellenbosch in the first round of the Telkom Knockout.
Bucs coach Rulani Mokwena says they were already planning for the Stellies since their next League match is against the PSL newcomers in Cape Town on October 26.
Interestingly, Pirates were then pitted against Stellenbosch for the knockout competition that kicks off on October 18, which means the two sides will meet in the cup before the league encounter.
It seems Mokwena wouldn’t have asked for a better draw, especially because he was already analysing Stellenbosch, but also because Pirates would be at home in their round of 16 duel.
“It’s a difficult draw in a sense that no team in the PSL is easy,” Mokwena told the media from the Rand Stadium yesterday.
“We had already started our analysis with Stellenbosch. We know they have an experienced coach in (Steve) Barker,” he said.
“They have an international goalkeeper in (Boy) de Jong and the two centre backs – (Sibusiso) Mthethwa and the captain – are strong.”
Mokwena further touched on other areas of the Stellenbosch team and has called on the Bucs faithful to come out in numbers when they meet at Orlando to help their cause to try to reach the next round of the competition.
