Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca have turned into real rivals on the continent.
Since 2017, Downs and the North Africans have met 10 times in the CAF Champions League.
Sundowns have won three. Wydad have won four. There have been 3 draws.
But off the field, the two clubs have developed a strong friendship.
When Downs have travelled to Morocco, the home supporters have applauded Downs coach Pitso Mosimane, showing him respect for being one of the continent’s finest tacticians.
After all, Mosimane was CAF’s 2016 Coach of the Year.
So when Wydad defender Achraf Dari suffered a long-term injury last year (cruciate ligament fracture), Mosimane posted a video wishing Dari a speedy recovery. Downs’s players joined in.
When Thapelo Morena was also ruled out with a bad injury this year (a fracture as well as ligament damage on his right ankle) the Wydad players sent their well wishes, cementing a good friendship.
So, it was heartwarming that Achraf Dari was spotted in a Sundowns jersey as he trained on his own during the break forced by the Coronavirus outbreak.
This proves yet again that football or sports in general has the power to change or unite the world.
