Morocco were crowned African Nations Championship (Chan) after overcoming Mali’s bold challenge 2-0 in a thrilling final at Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde on Sunday night.
Two second-half headers by Abdelmouna Boutouil and captain Ayoub El Kaabi sealed the victory for the Atlas Lions in the tournament in Cameroon to hand them the title.
Morocco became the first back-to-back winners of the tournament reserved for home-based players. They won five of their six matches, scored 15 goals, and conceded three.
Bouftini broke the deadlock on 69 minutes and captain El Kaabi doubled the lead 10 minutes later to create history after Morocco hosted and won the previous edition three years ago.
It was the second Chan final loss for Mali, after 2016, and they are still seeking a first Confederation of African Football (Caf) senior national team success.
