Mosimane confirms Sirino interest

Mamelodi Sundowns star player Gaston Sirino is on the radar of the best team in Africa, Al Ahly.

After weeks of speculations, coach Pitso Mosimane came out for the first time on Thursday to confirm that the Egyptian giants were in talks with Mamelodi Sundowns about a possible move for Sirino.

However, the Ahly coach Mosimane emphasised that he is not trying to lure the Sundowns playmaker to Egypt as reported.

It is well documented that the Uruguayan has been a subject of interest from Ahly for a number of months – predating Mosimane’s arrival at Ahly in early October.

The 29-year-old has been on top of his game for the past three seasons for the Brazilians with Mosimane stating that there have been official talks from Ahly to sign Sirino.

“All you guys [the media] know that Al Ahly have been asking about Sirino when I was at Sundowns. It’s a fact‚” Mosimane told the South African Football Journalists’ Association (Safja).

“It’s just a perception that I’m the one who wants Sirino at Al Ahly‚ because I’m in the hot seat. It will always link to me. I’m not angry about it‚ that it’s been linked to me. No‚ it has been there.

“And I was the one who said to Sirino‚ ‘No‚ don’t go‚ stay here [at Sundowns] – let’s win the second star’‚ and all that.  Before I came to Ahly there was‚ ‘Sirino‚ Sirino’‚ and there’s still‚ ‘Sirino’‚ because Ahly want him‚ they know him – because he played against them.

“That’s why I have stayed away from saying anything in South Africa. It’s the first time I speak to you guys [media].”

It has been reported that Sundowns rejected an offer from Ahly for Sirino just before the close of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) transfer window on Monday.

“Yes‚ Ahly want Sirino‚ Ahly like Sirino. Ahly spoke to Mamelodi Sundowns officially‚ and all that. I don’t want to tell you a lot of things‚ because there are many that have happened. Sirino wants to play for Ahly – yes‚ it’s a fact. Sundowns know that. It’s not Pitso.”

“There are a lot of emotions that might be linked to me. The stories that I want to take Themba Zwane and all that – no‚ I don’t have anything to do with Sundowns‚” said the two-time African Champions League winner

“But the opportunities are there to take. As Ahly sign players‚ as Sundowns sign Peter Shalulile and Kermit Erasmus‚ and players from Al Ahly are signed by teams in the English Premier League‚ it’s football – it’s an ecosystem.”
