Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane has admitted that the Red Devils have been hit with several injuries but he stressed that this cannot be an excuse for the team ahead of their CAF Champions League group stage opener against Al-Merrikh.
The Reds will begin their title defence campaign with a home game against Sudanese side Al-Merrikh on Tuesday, February 16.
Several players who competed in the FIFA Club World Cup have been left-out due to injuries and suspension such as Ali Maaloul, Ayman Ashraf, Hussein El-Shahat, Taher Mohamed Taher and Salah Mohsen.
However, The South African manager is not seeking to take from the absences an alibi ahead of their opener.
“We played tough games in the Club World Cup. It was a successful experience and we benefited from it. It showed that we have to improve on several things,” Mosimane said in pre-match press conference.
“My choices for the game have been influenced by the injuries we have. Though Al Ahly does not look for excuses, the whole squad is capable of replacing anyone.”
“Al Ahly’s games against Sudanese teams are always tough and we have the advantage of playing the first game at home. We will face a tough opponent that got more rest than us and has no absentees. We don’t look for excuses and I predict that we will achieve a positive result.
“I am happy to play at Cairo Stadium. Our focus right now is taking each game at a time.”
