Pitso Mosimane said Al Ahly will ‘fight for the title until the end’ after playing out to a 1-1 draw against National Bank SC on Thursday evening.
It was the Cairo giants’ first league encounter after their Caf Champions League final victory over Kaizer Chiefs and Mosimane’s men dropped two crucial points in their Egyptian Premier League title defence.
The 2021 Champions League winners opened the scoring early in the second half as Junior Ajayi’s deflected shot reached Mohamed Magdy Afsha in the penalty box and the latter’s shot went past goalkeeper Mohamed El Zonfouly.
However, Karim Bambo had other thoughts as he equalised just five minutes before the final whistle. Assem Salah’s cross was met with a header from Bambo who put the ball past Lotfy.
“I will not talk about excuses, the absence of international players, or the performance of referees,” said Mosimane.
“We knew from the beginning about their absence, and we agreed to that for the sake of the Olympic team, although the Olympic tournament is outside the international agenda, and there are many clubs in Europe who refused for their players to leave.”
Al Ahly now sit second on log standings with 52 points, nine behind leaders Zamalek, but they still have three games in hand. However, if they win all three of their remaining games they will still be on equal points with the White Knights.
Mosimane’s troops’ next match will be next Sunday, July 25 against bottom-placed Entag El-Harby, where they will hope to return to winning ways to remain in contention for the league title.
