Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane wants his men to do all in their power to maintain their position at the top of CAF Champions League Group C.
Sundowns are at the top of Group C with four points while Waydad Casablanca and USM Alger are behind them with two points apiece.
Petro de Luanda are at the bottom with one point. Sundowns face USM Alger this coming Friday in Algiers and Mosimane wants PSL champions to amass maximum points and ultimately advance to the next stage of the CAF Champions League by finishing on top in order to avoid the likes of Esperance, TP Mazembe and Al Ahly.
“We need to come back top of the log. That’s important. When we play here match day four and remain top of the log irrespective of the points. We can’t drop maximum points in Algiers. We must get three or one so that we stay on five points. Hopefully the goals will help us so that we stay on top. We do back to back with Alger. We should be able to win here. When Waydad comes we should not fight to qualify. We should fight to keep top of the log to Esperance, Mazembe, and Al Ahly,” said Mosimane.
Mosimane will be hoping his marksman Mauricio Offonso will be available when his relatively thin squad take on Alger.
“Hopefully Mauricio will be back. We don’t have a lot of players available for the Champions League. (Emeliano) Tade left one place. Phaka (Mhlambi) is not there. He is injured Kheletso (Makgalwa) has a groin. Anthony Laffor is out. We are minus five. If we are minus five, it means we have 25 registered players. We have 20 players and in those 20 players we have three goalkeepers,” said Mosimane.
The former Bafana Bafana coach revealed that Sundowns will be out in the transfer market looking to strengthen his side with two attackers.
“I think we should sign two players. If you look at the way, we are getting thin. We need two players. I think we need an attacker. Somebody who can help us to score goals. When Mauricio is not there you really don’t have a nine. You have Lebo (Maboe) who is a nine, but he hasn’t really been in top form”
“Sometimes Vila plays as a nine. Ali Meza likes to play on the side. He doesn’t like to play as a nine. I don’t want to be going to Thapelo and them playing as nine. I don’t think it is right. We also need a winger. Even a winger, he has to be a powerful winger. He has to be a little bit better than a Pitso. He must have a presence. We are on top of someone. He is a very good player. He doesn’t play here. He is a foreigner,” said Mosimane.
