Motsepe gives Mosimane blessing following resignation

Mamelodi Sundowns supremo Patrice Motsepe has given five-time PSL title-winning coach Pitso Mosimane his blessing following his surprise resignation on Wednesday morning.

Indications are that the PSL champions were taken aback by the sudden resignation that comes just a few months after Mosimane renewed his contract by a further four years.

On Wednesday afternoon, the club’s president, Motsepe, confirmed Mosimane and his agent Moira Tlhagale, who is also his wife, briefed him on the discussions between Pitso Mosimane “and a top Egyptian club”. Mosimane is on his way to record 42-time Egyptian champions Al Ahly.

“Sundowns has been aware of the ongoing discussions between Pitso Mosimane and the Egyptian club and with other North African clubs. I have on several occasions over the past few years expressed my support for Pitso Mosimane leaving Sundowns to coach in North Africa or Europe or Bafana Bafana. Football players and coaches have at times an uncertain and inconsistent future and must pursue new opportunities where they may grow and receive greater remuneration,” Motsepe said.

He added that he had received a warm and emotional note from Mosimane, who has been in charge at the club for eight years. Motsepe further said he was very proud of Mosimane’s achievements at Mamelodi Sundowns, which include a record five League titles.

“Pitso has been the most successful coach in the history of Sundowns and will always be a member of the Mamelodi Sundowns Family. I wish him, Moira and his family everything of the very best and I hope to see him coaching in Europe soon.”

Motsepe said Sundowns will soon make announcements in due course concerning the new head coach and other changes that we are introducing. In a statement, Mosimane said: “I’m taking up this new challenge that will push me out of my comfort zone. I know Mamelodi Sundowns will use this as a fresh and new perspective.”

Swiss coach René Weiler will be in charge of the Egyptian giants for the last time tonight when they take on Tersana in an Egypt Cup tie. The club is expected to announce Mosimane as its new coach in the next few days.
