Motshwari ready for a tough Soweto derby battle

Ben Motshwari is bracing himself for a bruising battle when Orlando Pirates take on Soweto rivals, Swallows at Orlando Stadium on Sunday afternoon (15:30).

The ‘Buccaneers’ are still licking their wounds after suffering their first defeat of the season to league champions Mamelodi Sundowns away last weekend, but Motshwari is optimistic that they will bounce back stronger against a ruthless Swallows side.

The 1-0 defeat to Sundowns saw Pirates remain fifth on the league standings with Motshwari emphasising the need and importance of collecting maximum points at home this weekend in the derby.

“The preparations for the Swallows game are going quite well, we had a full week to train since the Caf Confederation Cup match [against Sagrada Esperança] has been cancelled,” said the hard working midfielder.

“We had a full week to focus on the mistakes that we had against Sundowns, so we are ready, and it is a bonus for us because we are playing a home game where we have to collect three points. At home, we are not supposed to lose.”

Meanwhile, Swallows remain undefeated this season, having secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Cape Town City at Dobsonville Stadium in their most recent game.

The victory saw the ‘Birds’ go level on points with log leaders Sundowns, who are three points clear.

“It is a must-win game since they are coming to our own backyard. It is going to be a difficult one as they are on form, second on the log, they are doing quite well for themselves but for us, we need to bounce back strong,” added Motshwari.

“Playing for Pirates, every game is difficult, this is a chance for us to come back strong. The mood is quite good in camp.

“Everyone is willing to work hard and raring to go, everyone is trying to raise their hands. And I think that’s a positive for us with everyone raising the bar and their hands, wanting to play,” concluded Motshwari who has made 11 appearances in all competitions this campaign so far.
