Buffalo City Municipal Stars (BCM Stars) finished the Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League like a house on fire under the tutelage of Tshepo Motsoeneng when they defeated Spear of the Nation FC 3-1 on aggregate to book a spot at the national playoffs.
BCM Stars played against Spears in two-legged encounters in the provincial playoffs. The first leg ended with a 2-0 scoreline in favour of Motsoeneng’s side and went on to play to a 1-all draw in the second leg on Saturday afternoon.
This will be the fourth time in a row for Motsoeneng qualifying for the ABC Mostepe League national playoffs, having done that before with Tornado FC (twice) and Bizana Pondo Chiefs, who won the national playoffs last year.
Reacting to their provincial playoffs final game, coach Motsoeneng, a man who knows the recipe of winning titles in the South African Football third-tier admitted they had a tough time, however, they stuck to their game plan in order to walk victorious at the end of the day.
“It was a very tight and tactical game. Obviously, they came to fight and try to be on us at all costs. But for us, it was our home match and we had to fight, defend well, respect our lines and frustrate them,” said Motsoeneng.
“We had a 2-0 cushion. We couldn’t give that away and we told ourselves that we need to score. It did not matter when but we had to score. Chances were there in the first half but we struggled. A champion team shouldn’t do that. We should convert our chances so we can make the game easy.
“However, we are learning from that and they will come better and hopefully go to win the national championship because this was a test as we managed to come back from behind to score the equalizer.”
The former Bizana Chiefs mentor has only one ambition which is to win the national playoffs and gain promotion to the GladAfrica Championship.
“The next step is to promote this club. We are going there for the championship and we will bring the trophy home. We are marching to the GladAfrica. I think we have a team that is ready and prepared for a fight,” he says in conclusion.
