Mozambique U20 head coach Dário Monteiro insists that the first game is the most important as they are gearing up to face Uganda in their first game of the 2021 Total U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
The tournament is set to kick off on the 14th of February 2021 in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
Mozambique are drawn in Group A alongside hosts Mauritania, Cameroon and Uganda.
Monteiro says all opponents are difficult and respectful but emphasised that is key to get a victory in the first match and then think of the other encounters thereafter.
“Cameroon are always a giant at any level. Mauritania are the hosts and naturally, they want to win. Uganda is a team that has been progressively rising, not only in the youth ranks but also at the senior level,” says the 43-year-old mentor.
The Mambinhas will commence their Afcon U-20 preparations with an encounter against domestic side Black Bulls Association, while they are looking for other games before departure to Mauritania.
“We will now enter the third and final stage of preparation, focused on giving the team more competitive games to be able to produce a surprise in Mauritania,” he adds.
“I’m satisfied with the players’ behavior. Mambinhas are working to give their best.”
