Mozambique head coach Luís Gonçalves has named a squad of 23 players to face Cameroon in back-to-back 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers scheduled for next month.
The Mambas kick-start the journey to the African football’s premier showpiece with an away match against Cameroon on Thursday, 12 November before hosting the second encounter a few days later on Monday, 16 November.
From the list of the squad announced by Gonçalves on Monday, the biggest highlight is the return of Simão Mate, who last played in the national team back in 2016 against Ghana.
“What guided Simão’s summons is his quality as a player and the fact that at this moment I consider his presence in the selection to be important not only for the quality he has but also for all the experience he carries with him,” said Gonçalves.
French Ligue 1 side Bordeaux defender Mexer is not part of the squad due as a result of an injury.
Gonçalves called up the following players:
Goalkeepers: Guirrugo (UD Songo), Frenque (Fer. Maputo), Victor (Costa do Sol).
Defenders: Bheu (UD Songo), Zainadine (Maritime), Sidique (UD Songo); Bonera (Marítimo), Reinildo (Lille), Edmilson (Cape Town City), Simão Mate (Vegalta Sendai), Chico (TS Sporting FC).
Midfielders: Kambala (Baroka FC), Néné (Costa do Sol), Kamo-Kamo (Vitória FC), Telinho (UD Songo), Domingues, Geny Catamo (Sporting Clube de Portugal), Kito (Ferroviário de Maputo).
Forwards: Clésio (Zira FK), Luís Miquissone (Simba FC), Reginaldo (FC Kaysar), Rafito (1.CFR Pforzheim), Witi (Nacional de Madeira), Amâncio (Marítimo).
Mozambique and Cameroon lead Group F qualifying for AFCON 2020, both with four points, followed by Cape Verde, with two, and Rwanda without any points.
