Mphahlele’s plan to help Limpopo teams prosper

Lack of competitiveness in the premiership or other leagues by Limpopo teams is a big concern for Baroka chairman Khurishi Mphahlele, who has now created a pre-season platform to help local teams prepare.

The province is traditionally known for having teams fighting relegation since the inception of the PSL in 1996.

To date, only Baroka (Telkom Knockout 2018) and Marumo Gallants (Nedbank Cup 2021) are the only clubs from the province to ever win a domestic trophy.

Previously, clubs such as Ria Stars, Dynamos, Black Leopards and Polokwane City have managed to qualify for a top-eight spot, but no club has ever finished in the top four.

Speaking on the sidelines of the inaugural Top four pre-season tournament that took place at Baroka Village, Lebowakgomo on Saturday, Mphahlele says he is committed to seeing the success of local teams for the benefit of the province.

“This is all about preparation. We sat down and asked ourselves why our teams from this province struggle in the league. And we identified preparation as one of the areas where our teams are failing,” said Mphahlele.

“So, we came with the concept to do a top four tournament for the province so that we can help them prepare for the upcoming season,” he added.

The event was attended by amongst others Black Leopards chairman David Thidiela, Marumo Gallants chairman, Abram Sello, TS Sporting chairman Thobela Slungu, Monflair co-director Puledi Manamela and Global Oil CEO Theo Mphosi.

“We want to see more clubs participating in the top division. The more clubs we have the more the economy of this province will grow. We are basically fighting poverty,” said Mphahlele.
