Mr Mike Mokoena was a charismatic leader – Middendorp

South African football has been plunged into mourning after the death of Free State Stars chairman Mike Mokoena who succumbed to cancer at the Sandton Oncology Clinic in the early hours of Wednesday.

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Ernst Middendorp expressed sadness after receiving the news of the veteran football administrator’s death.

“I coached Free State Stars in 2015, I was profoundly saddened when I learned of the passing of Mr Mike Mokoena’s death, Mr Mokoena was a charismatic leader who showed power… on the basis of exceptional personal qualities,” said Middendorp.

“In our regular technical team, Mr Mokoena simply used to say what needs to be said directly and straight forwardly at the same time,” – Middendorp.

“I enjoyed the way how he inspired people to work together and how he created a team with a goal orientated atmosphere, it was always a pleasure and I was really blessed to have had the opportunity to be the coach at Free State Stars,” added the former ‘Ea Lla Koto’ mentor.

“The Mokoena family is saddened by the passing on of our father and founder of Free State Stars football club‚ Ntate Mike Mokoena,” – The Mokoena family. 

“He succumbed to cancer after a long battle. He was receiving treatment at Sandton Oncology Clinic when he departed in the early hours of Wednesday,” confirmed the Mokoena family in a statement.

Tributes have been pouring in on social media from Premier Soccer League (PSL) clubs for the late Ntate Mokoena.

‘Amakhosi’ chairman Kaizer Motaung has extended his heartfelt condolences to Mokoena family. “Ha moya wa hae o phomole ka kgotso,” said Motaung.

ProSport International CEO Mike Makaab said that football has lost an ‘amazing man’. “I have lost a great friend of many years. To the family, you are in my prayers during this difficult time. He will never be forgotten. Ntate Mokoena may your soul RIP.”
