Nigerian shot-stopper wins POTY award


Manuka Okoye has won the Player of the Year award at his Dutch Eredivisie club, Sparta Rotterdam.

The fans of the Castle Lords voted in their majority for the Nigerian shot-stopper after his record 10 clean sheets helped the club finish in eighth spot in the 2020/21 season.

Okoye joined Rotterdam from German Bundesliga outfit Fortuna Duesseldorf in July 2020 and initially played for their reserve side before making his first team debut in a 4-1 defeat against Heerenveen on the first of November.

The 21-year-old then established himself as the club’s number one goalkeeper and helped them finish in the top half of the table.

“Supporters of Sparta Rotterdam were given the opportunity to vote for their Player of the Season, an election that was won by Maduka Okoye,” read a club statement.

“The goalkeeper, who played 28 league games and managed to keep his goal clean 10 times, received the prize from Henk van Stee.”

Rotterdam qualified for the 2021/22 Europa Conference League play-offs, but they lost to Feyenoord who sealed the final qualification ticket.

Born in Dusseldorf, Okoye started his journey at Bayer Leverkusen academy between before proceeding to Fortuna Dusseldorf who gave him the first professional contract.

Nigeria national team coach Gernot Rohr lured the youngster to play for the Super Eagles and he made his debut in 2019. Okoye is now the number choice in goals for the three-time African champions.
