Excellence, quality, passion and commitment can all be used when referring to Coach Nkululeko Malgas.
The fact that he combines efficiency in performance analysis, scouting and coaching makes him a rare-breed in football development.
FARPost Technical Study Group (TSG) unveils the person and the work behind a man named ‘Coach Malankan’
1. Who is Nkululeko Malgas?
Coach Nkululeko Khwezilomso ‘Malankan’ Malgas was born on the 20th October 1978 in Butterworth, Eastern Cape. In 1996, he completed his Matric at the Vuli-Valley Secondary School.
He played for some local teams in and around the area, but his main passion was coaching and player scouting.
2. TUKS Graduate and Analyst
Coach Malankan received his early advanced education from the University of Pretoria, were he graduated with a Certificate in Sport Club Development in 2005.
The course deals with basic sport development aspects from organizations of sports related events, coaching, youth development and general administration of local and national sports bodies.
Ironically, he works as an employee of TUKS GladAfrica Championship team as a Senior Analyst, with a clear mandate of analyzing and breaking down the opposition.
3. Dual Coaching and Performance Expert
In 2011, he was one of the International Coaches invited to attend the high-profile UEFA Basic License Course in Zeiss, Netherlands.
As a dedicated student of the game, Coach Malankan has seen it fit to equip himself with the necessary qualifications in both coaching and performance analysis. Some of his qualifications include:
• CAF B License in Johannesburg in 2010
• UEFA Basic License in Zeist, Netherlands in 2011
• SAFA LEVEL 2 in Durban in 2012
• FIFA Grassroots Instructor Course in Durban in 2012
• WFA Specialist in Periodisation in Johannesburg in 2013
• STATS Notational Level 1 Performance Analysis in Cape Town in 2016
4. Nedbank Cup Winner
Many in the football fraternity will not forget the triumph of TS Galaxy over the mighty Kaizer Chiefs at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. On the same evening, Coach Malankan was the ‘mastermind’ behind Dan Malesela’s performance analysis approach.
As the TS Galaxy performance analyst, he provided the vital analysis blueprint in terms of the strengths and weaknesses of the opposition leading to the final.
5. Scouting abilities
The work of such coaches (like Coach Malankan) is often undervalued and undermined. However, in the case of Coach Malgas his scouting blueprint is evident in relation to one Terrence Mashego.
He spotted and analysed Mashego to the tee, and later facilitated his move to Galaxy, before he moved to Cape Town City in the 2020/21 DSTV Premiership season.
This ‘NFD Scouting Encyclopedia’ will surely be useful to Bizana Pondo Chiefs as they navigate the difficult terrain of the GladAfrica Championship.
