Golden Arrows head coach Steve Komphela has congratulated his friend Gavin Hunt for the latter’s appointment as the new head coach at Kaizer Chiefs and believes there is no one more deserving of the job than the former Bidvest Wits coach.
Hunt was last week appointed as the new man in charge at Amakhosi for the next three seasons.
Komphela who is a former coach at Chiefs himself says his old club needs to forget about what transpired last season and start afresh with Hunt.
“First of all I must take the opportunity to congratulate Gavin Hunt and wish him the very best,” Komphela told the media on Tuesday.
“He is a very close friend of mine, make no mistake and I don’t think, with the outmost respect to all the available coaches in the country, there is anyone more deserving. He deserves the shot as well and his pedigree as well.
“I am not going to tell Kaizer Chiefs supporters what to do, I am not going to tell Kaizer Chiefs management what to do, but all I can say in terms of football is that maybe the best way to move forward faster is to move forward with the one you have.
“Because if you want to move forward with the one you have, at the back of the previous energy, you are complicating things,” he said.
Komphela believes Hunt’s strong character will make help him succeed at Amakhosi.
“I just wish Gavin Hunt will step in, he is thick-skinned, and he is a big boy. He has been in the league for years so just go in, even though there will always be the review and the reflection of the previous season.”
With Chiefs having lost last season’s Premiership title on the last day, Komphela is hoping the bad energy that comes with the misfortune will not be part of the Hunt side.
“But there is nothing you can do about the previous season, it’s gone. Now that energy… listen they were almost there, almost there, it was only a matter of 30 minutes and I felt so sorry for Ernst Middendorp. Our job is such a thankless job, I felt sorry for Ernst because who could ever go through that?
“However that energy should not then be transferred to Gavin. However, if it gets transferred to him, Gavin must understand that blessings and burdens are cousins.” He emphasised.
